The Cuban and Puerto Rican Indians played a game similar to baseball long before the National Past Time began in the United States. When the Spaniards discovered Fernandina (Cuba), and Boriken (Puerto Rico) they found the Taíno Indians competing in a rudimentary game called "Batos". The object of the game was to hit a ball with a stick similar to the baseball bat, circle a square of four bases, without getting hit with the ball which the defense threw at the runners. Ironically, three runners hit with the ball meant three outs and a switch of teams batting and defending. The playing field was named "batey" in relation to the game of Batos and the ball was constructed with leaves molded with resine extracted from trees.... |
